What is a Website?
A website is a collection of web pages that are hosted on a web server and can be accessed by users via the internet. Websites can be used for a variety of purposes, such as providing information, selling products or services, or facilitating communication and collaboration.
Beginning of the Website?
The concept of a website originated with the invention of the World Wide
Web by Tim Berners-Lee in 1989. Berners-Lee, a British computer scientist
working at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research was looking
for a way to allow researchers to easily access and share information over the
Internet.
He developed a system of hypertext links and a standardized markup
a language called HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) that could be used to create
and share web pages. This system became the foundation of the World Wide Web,
which provided a way to access and share information over the internet using a
a standardized set of protocols.
The first website was created by Berners-Lee himself in 1991, and it
consisted of a single page with information about the World Wide Web project.
The website was hosted on a NeXT computer at CERN.
From there, the use of the internet and the World Wide Web grew rapidly,
and businesses and organizations began to see the potential of having a
presence on the web. The first commercial website, which sold books online, was
created by a company called Books.com in 1992.
As the internet and the World Wide Web continued to evolve, so did websites. The introduction of CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), JavaScript, and other web technologies allowed for more sophisticated and interactive websites. E-commerce sites, such as Amazon and eBay, became more prevalent, and search engines, such as Google and Yahoo!, emerged as a way to help users find information on the web.
